About Us
Sunshine’s Friends Cat and Dog Rescue (SFCDR) is a 501(c)(3) volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to helping cats and dogs in need across northern Anne Arundel County and eastern Howard County, Maryland. Founded on compassion and practical action, we have served animals in our community since 2000 and formally incorporated as a nonprofit in October 2014. Today, as Sunshine’s Friends Cat and Dog Rescue, we operate from our home-based intake and adoption center in Jessup, Maryland, giving homeless, abandoned, injured, and unwanted animals a second chance.
Our Mission: The 5 R’s
Our primary mission is to reduce the homeless and unwanted cat and dog population by promoting and sponsoring spay/neuter services throughout our service area. We achieve this through five interconnected goals—the 5 R’s:
- Rescue abandoned community cats and dogs in desperate situations
- Rehabilitate the sick, injured, and abused
- Rehome adoptable cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies into permanent homes with suitable guardians
- Refuge — provide a loving temporary home for those not yet ready for adoption
- Reduce local shelter intake and the community cat population through TNR (trap-neuter-return), and by ensuring every adoptee is spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped
These five principles guide every program we run, from emergency intake and adoption matching to barn-cat placements, low-cost or no-cost spay/neuter assistance, community support initiatives, and education.
Who We Are
We are a volunteer-driven organization. We believe every animal deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity for a good life. Our ultimate goal is to end the unnecessary euthanasia of healthy and treatable cats and dogs by addressing the root causes of overpopulation and by supporting both the animals and the people who care for them.
How We Serve the Community
- Support for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) projects that stabilize community cat populations
- Low-cost and no-cost spay/neuter programs for owned pets
- Thoughtful adoption matching (including our Cat-Match approach)
- Barn-cat placements for outdoor-oriented cats
- Community support and education
Sunshine’s Friends exists because one thin, hungry cat named Sunshine wandered into a yard in Jessup years ago—and because the people who met him chose to act. That single act of kindness grew into an organization that continues to rescue, heal, place, shelter, and prevent suffering for countless animals in our communities.
